 Freedive BC offers 2 different types of Freediving Courses: 

1) Rec. Freediver courses and 2) AIDA Freediving courses.

 

Rec. Freediver Courses (NEW):

Rec. Freediver  courses are NEW and IMPROVED freediving courses that provide more practical and more thorough recreational freediving training for open water compared to traditional Freediving courses offered by common freediving agancies such as AIDA, PFI. SSI, PADI. Rec. Freediving courses specialize solely in open water (ocean and lake) freediving depth training disciplines with heavy emphasiz on teaching, drilling and trouble-shooting the Frenzel ear equalization technique, as well as maximizing training for effcient movement under water, both during descent, ascent aswell as moving along the sea floor.

REC FREEDIVER 1 -  Beginner Freediving course

Requirements: none

Course Duration: 2 - 3 days  ( 2 days if choosing self-study for theory portion of the course, 3 days if choosing to have in-class theory sessions led by instructor. The latter option is recommended )

 

Course Description

This course offers a basic knowledge of freediving and introductory skills such as relaxation of body and mind, finning techniques, duck dives and equalization.

The course consists or theory (in class) portion as well as pool and open water.

Maximum depth allowable for the course is 12 m. This course focuses on Frenzel

equalization training and approaching depth in a comfortable manner.

  • DAY 1 ( Thursday ): Theory Class, 6:15 pm - 9:15 pm, Richmond

REC 1

REC 2 FREEDIVER  - Intermediate Freediving Course

  • Be 18 years of age or older (16 or 17 years old with parent or guardian consent)

  • Can swim at least 200m non-stop without fins or at least 300m non-stop with mask, fins and snorkel

  • 16 meters CWT , (20 meters maximum allowable depth for the course)

Course Duration: 2-4 days ( 2 days if choosing self-study for theory portion of the course and omitting Frenzel workshop. 4 days if choosing to have in-class theory sessions led by instructor + attending Frenzel workshop. The latter option is recommended

 

Course Description

REC FREEDIVER 2 is an intermediate freediving course aimed for recreational freediving and spearfishing. In this course you will learn how to safely and efficiently freedive up to 20m.

The course is heavily focused on teaching and practicing Frenzel Equalization technique along with relaxation and drilling of techniques. The techniques taught include Frenzel equalization, duck diving, vertical swimming, body positioning, use of buoyancy and traversing the along the bottom of the seafloor. This course  offers more in-depth training of Frenzel Equalization technique and more drilling of open water and depth techniques than AIDA 2 Freediving course.

 

The freediving theory will include:

Introduction to Freediving Freediving Breathing Cycle, Frenzel Equalization, Freediving Techniques, Safety in Freediving, Equipment in Freediving and Spearfishing.

  • Have completed the REC FREEDIVER 2 or AIDA 2 courses or have completed the Crossover Evaluation if crossing over from another freediving agency

 

Requirements:

  • 24 meters CWT, (30 meters maximum allowable depth for the course)

Course Duration: 5 days 

 

Course Description

REC 3  course is designed to further develop skills from previous level course REC 2  or AIDA 2, to acquire new skills and gain a greater knowledge of safety procedures and techniques. This course is designed for those wanting to take freediving more seriously and to greater recreational depths (up to 30 meters). The new techniques that are introduced are free-fall, in-depth Frenzel Equalizing for outmost efficient equalization efficiency, adaptation to- and training for depth, the risks of increasing and decreasing pressure and also how to minimize these risks. Students will train these skills in the most common disciplines of freediving: Free Immersion and Constant Weight.

The theory will include: Physiology, Equalization, Barotrauma, Lungs at Depth, Buoyancy, Shallow Water Blackout, Training Concepts, The Mammalian Dive Response, Decompression Sickness , Surface Intervals and the Freediver's Code of Conduct.

Course Description

AIDA 2 is a basic freediving course aimed for recreational freediving and spearfishing.  In AIDA 2 course you will learn how to safely and efficiently freedive up to 20m.

The static and dynamic sessions in confined water (lake/pool/ flat water ocean bay) are used to teach relaxation, breathing, finning and safety techniques. In the open water (ocean) sessions students will apply the skills they have learned in the pool / confined water sessions and combine them with the basic skills of open water freediving such as equalizing, duck diving, vertical swimming, body positioning, turns and use of buoyancy.

The course consists of a theory portion that covers topics such as Gear & Equipment, Safety & Hazards, Species Identification & Regulations, Understanding Topography, Currents & Tides, Spearfishing Techniques & Efficiency of Movement and a practical open water portion that covers all concepts and techniques explained in the theory portion.
